Hi Guys, thought you might be interesed.
I’ve just taken delivery of an 8 disk RAID5, 4TB system for my Final Cut Pro HD suite based on my existing MacPro Quad and I’m very impressed. I bought it from a company in the UK called Rentaraid and I’m amazed they can put together a system that has such extensive RAID capabilities for the price. It’s also physically compact and quiet which is a great bonus. We’ve done a huge amount of testing and pulled drives in and out and it’s coped without fault and rebuilt the raid. Whilst rebuilding it allows me to read and write data upto 200m/b, everything is done in the bkgd. System very fast easily enough for HD 10bit uncompressed…and safe. Neil at Rentaraid was a great help setting up the system and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.
Best system for the money without doubt.I think.
I’m away for the next 2 weeks…hitting the sun, so contact Neil at RentaRaid if you want to know more.

Since you double posted this, I’ll double post my reply to your first note.

Run it for 6 months straight in daily HD production and then let us know how it is. I was extremely impressed with the CalDigit S2VR HD units right out of the box and let the entire Cow Community know I was impressed. But they could not hold up to day to day operation and did not last more than three months in our shop. So if your unit runs solid for at least 6 months, 8 to 12 hours a day, then let us know, I would definitely take a peek at them.

Walter I appreciate where you’re coming from(with your history of breaking Raids!), but this is Raid 5 solution and I have bought the 9th drive in the event of problems. Have extensively tested but will continue to give you feedback. Contact Neil and find out the cost….you’ll be really amazed. I’m surprised no one else has come across this solution at this price. All the drives are enterprise level drives which helps put you mind at rest. If anything breaks Neil will be on the case. You can’t loose your data unless you have a fire of course. If you’re looking for a solution…this just might be it.( I reposted ‘cos I thought it was along way down the list and that people might miss it) This a recommendation not an advert.

Nothing puts my mind at rest until I know it can work day to day like our old Med

Completely agree but check out the price and do yourself a favour, oh and it works.
The support is UK based though…but I’m sure support can be arranged as most of the parts come from your neck of the woods.
Last year I was looking at the same solution and it cost 6-8 times the cost.
    Thats it,I’m going on hols.
    All the best

So what made you stop using Medea Raids?”

The purchase by Avid. The company is barely still running now as it appears all Avid wanted was some of the technology. We’re talking with Ciprico right now and will be meeting with them at NAB.

So it seems to me your saying that e-SATA raids are not the way to go – Fibre Channel is still required. I say this as an owner of both Medea and X-Raid fibre channel arrays who is looking to expand and was considering E-Sata raids as an option.

[Herb Sevush] “So it seems to me your saying that e-SATA raids are not the way to go – Fibre Channel is still required”

Nope, not saying that at all. SATA is plenty fast enough for Uncompressed HD in the right setup. I have two LaCie S2S SATA arrays running in our two suites right now, I’m cutting DVCPro HD on one and we’re cutting 8bit SD on the other. No problems.

What I’m saying is that the CalDigit’s didn’t work for us in day to day use. I really like those guys and hope they get everything figure out because the price on those units were awesome and they were very responsive in the tech support. Just couldn’t

What we’re now considering is tying our two main suites together with shared storage and that takes us back to Fibre Channel.

and loads of money. My solution that I speak of is sata, multi- lane. Quiet, fast, reliable…so far…and relatively inexpensive.
A good bit cheaper than caldigit solutions and everything out there.
    Sorry going on hols.
