I am not 100% certain, but I believe that since you have a dual processor, HT isn’t needed. Hyper-threading merely fooled PPRO into thinking that there were multiple processors.

It is worth spending the little extra on a faster processor as this helps rendering. If you’re looking at HD editing in the future beware that even the highly compressed HDV is massively processor intensive and most editing applications will pre-render all your clips on the timeline to a native format such as AVI or QuickTime.

True HD video is the realm of very high-powered Workstations and even then most editing applications have to use a lower resolution ‘proxy’ version of the clips to edit with and finally re-linking to the HD media for the final rendered output.

Yes, the processor is a none hyper-threaded version. The next generation chip is likely to add hyper-threading back again. PPro is hyper-threading aware and required for HDV editing to be smoother.

If the machine is used for just video editing – you shouldn’t really use it for much else and definitely keep it away from the Internet, the video card isn’t that important. Check with the PPRo requirements to be sure.

You should never rely on the onboard sound chip for any editing application. Use something like a Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live.

5.) Is it worth $220 to go to 4GB memory?

No. The application can only ever use 2GB. There is an option to start XP with the /3GB switch, which will help prevent the OS from grabbing as much of your RAM but this only applies if you have 4GB installed.

i’ve gotten most of premiere to work minus aspect hd. i am now back to using xp pro from vista ultimate.
