I have just seen the new 6 Gig SATA drive arrays from Maxx Digital. They are 16 bay drive arrays, with FOURTY EIGHT TERABYTES of storage, and can do 1600 MB/sec (this is no typo). HOLY CREATIVE COW, this is going to change everything. There are two different host adaptors that will be able to do this. Units are in beta and will be released BEFORE NAB 2011.

    Bob,
We discussed this at last NAB. It\’s taken nearly a year but we have it now. What\’s exciting is that even smaller 4 and 5 drive RAIDs will eventually be able to possibly do uncompressed HD, copy files faster, and deliver more layers with ProRes, even ProRes4444.
The drive bottleneck seems to be clearing.

This is correct. I have not done enough testing, but smaller arrays, and even internal arrays will be able to do what everyone wants, and the prices WILL NOT INCREASE from what people are used to. That is the amazing part.

Changing to SATA from traditional parallel SCSI drives was a big step – THIS is a giant step.
