Apple waits for precisely NOBODY to be ready when they update their operating systems. And I mean nobody. Notice that the only software of consequence they showed at the launch was their own. This has pretty much always been true.
Be sure you’re looking before you leap. Avid has said they’ll be ready by the end of the year. Folks like Adobe have said sometime in 2007 — that’s right, no Photoshop, After Effects, etc.
It’s not qualified officially, but I’ll tell you that in my experience, you can just load your Avid software on the Windows side of the boot and be good to go. Don’t worry about the Windows part of the equation. As ugly as the OS is, it’s every bit as easy to use as Mac. (Even after 22 years of Mac use, I actually find the latest version of Windows easier than Mac. Shhhh….)
Don’t forget that Avid is virtually the same on Mac and Windows — and I’ve never seen it run faster than it does on the Windows side of Mactel boot, even a MacBook. One of the coolest things is that the performance is so strong that you can even assign the Mac side of the disk as your media drive! It really is a pleasure to use.
The good news is that Avid includes both Windows and Mac software in the same box. Install it, and you’re good to go — your dongle works on both platforms. One of the benefits of using Avid is that they’re only ones who can do this for you.
Again, totally unsupported. But if you’re ready to buy a MacBook, this solution totally works. Once more, be sure that ALL the software you need is ready to go on Mactel — I’m willing to bet that it’s not, so be careful.
Best,
Tim
