I am onlining a show which contains nested sequences. The original nested sequences are 5 hours long and there are only a few shots from them in the final show. I am conforming the show and FCP wants to put the entire original nested sequences back online. I am really close to filling up my 5 terabytes of disk space.

    I am looking to

    just a thought….
can you navigate into the nest and select the few shots you need, move them out of the nest, maybe in a temp sequence.
Then you might be able to minimize your recapture. You mentioned that you don’t need most of the nest, so this might work.

From what I am gathering from the stuff I am reading, I am not the first to get hammered by this one. Lesson learned! The offline editor did his best in most cases to eliminate the nested sequences. I will try what you have offered as a solution and hope for the best. The only problem I have is that I have already captured most of the footage for the show and I have to figure out a way to create new master clips without going through the standard make offline project business.

    Thanks for the reply,

If you drag the nest into the browser you can Apple or Option drag (I forget which) back into the timeline and you should get the individual shots (“de-nested”) that you need.

This kind of thing is one of my pet peeves about FCP having been an Avid editor for years. If you take a project offline and then at a later point try to capture just the final sequence, it may well try to recapture the entire clips rather than just the sections in the timeline. I believe one of the “fixes” in 5.1 is the ability to media manage an offline project though.
