  • Need TV rendering help with Sony HV30 and Sony Vegas

I’m very new to all of this. I’ve only ever done webcasting. Our church is wanting to broadcast on TV. So, here’s my questions..

    1. How do I render for TV? What format? Should I print to tape or DVD?

    2. When I burn a DVD of our service, it doesn’t look like it does on the web. I do understand that TV and webcasting are polar opposites, so I really need some advice. All I currently have is the Sony Vegas 8 student version. I’ve actually uploaded our very first video podcast. It looked great online, but when I rendered it out in DVD Architect, it didn’t look so hot. I can’t seem to get it ‘clear’.

    3. What settings or filters should I apply to the TV version? I’ve been experimenting with just about everything but just can’t seem to find my way.

Can anyone help point me in the right direction?

Sheri, I know that there are a few users here do what you want to do on a regular basis so hopefully they’ll offer some suggestions as well.

When you say “broadcast on TV”, do you mean a TV station, a cable channel or public access?
I ask because each one will probably have different requirements.
The best thing you can do is to ask them what those requirements are and then tell us so that we can offer specific suggestions.
My best guess is that tape would be required for a TV station while (some) cable stations and public access channels would be OK with a DVD.

A DVD can look very good but it all depends on the quality of your source material and how long the service is.

How long is a typical service?

We are using 2 Canon HV30 camcorders. Our services are usually 50-60 minutes long for DVDs, but I break them down into 24 minutes for tv. I’m not sure if our Pastor is talking with a cable company or a tv station. But I know that it is not public access. I have emailed him and asked him to give them a call and find out what format they need it in. Once I hear back from him I’ll repost.

Also, the background seems like it is slightly moves. I’m not sure how to describe it. I can’t seem to get the DVD smooth and clean like I see it on tape. Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to change some settings on my camera or in Vegas to clean this up?

Breaking them down to 24 min. sounds like a TV station (leaves room for commercials to fill up a 1/2 hr. time slot).

In your first post, you said that you had the “student” version.
By that, I assume you mean that you bought it at the student price as there’s no difference between the student version and the full version other than the price.
Do you have Vegas Pro 8 or Vegas Movie Studio?

    Is the church reasonably well-lit?

If it’s Pro 8, are you using the default MPEG-2 settings (DVD Architect NTSC video stream) when you render?
If so, try changing it to use a CBR of 8,000,000.
You do this by clicking the “Custom” button next to the “template” box.
    Then click the “Video” tab.
Finally, click the CBR (Constant Bit Rate) button and change it to 8,000,000.
Since this is a higher bitrate than the default, you should see an improvement in the picture quality.
This can be saved as a preset for future use by clicking in the “template” box at the top of the “Video” tab, entering a new name and saving it.

We are using Sony Vegas Movie Studio. We hope to have Vegas Pro 8 by the fall.

We went into DVD architect, we couldn’t find the settings that you were telling us about. So we clicked on make dvd. Then clicked on prepare, then optimize. We were able to change the settings on Video 1 from 8,000 Mbps bitrate to 9.800 Mbps bitrate. We took it off progressive since its for DVD and not web. That seemed to help a bit.

Lighting, well there are issues with lighting in our church. We are still trying to work all of that out. I’ve uploaded our very first video podcast. I don’t remember if we are able to post links in this forum or not, so if you’d like to get a better view of our lighting, just go to our church’s website. It’s Lafayette Church of God. It’s the very first one that pops up in google. Then go to podcasting, the video one is called No Regrets. This is our very first project like this. I’d love to get some professional feedback as we live way out in the middle of nowhere and there’s no one to ask for advice out here.

    Thanks

    Sheri,

[Sheri Christie] “We were able to change the settings on Video 1 from 8,000 Mbps bitrate to 9.800 Mbps bitrate.”

That’s not a good idea. It could hurt your compatability with some players. Leave it at 8k of it’s already there.

    Christie:

The settings to adjust the MPEG are in the “render as” dialog within Vegas, not Architect. I don’t have studio so I’m not sure what custom options are available.

    Blessings,
    Don
