  • Need to rip DVD and edit with Premier CS3 Please Help

Posted by Ted Hendricks on November 4, 2009 at 12:29 am

Thanks in advance for your help. I created a 45 minute DVD in Premier 6 a few years back and then the computer crashed!. I only have the DVD and now need to rip it so I can edit in Premier CS3.

I have spent countless hours downloading software and trying to get this to work. I have had success getting VOB or IFO files but they dont seem to work when I import to Premier as I get no picture. I tried to convert to MPG but the video result was choppy. I tried to convert to AVI but got no picture.

I am confused with the mulitudes of codecs and conversions.

The bottom line is that I want to rip my DVD and then import to Premier. I am looking for a step by step tutorial that walks me through it.

    Thanks again

A couple of full proof ways:

Use an A/D converter to capture directly from the DVD playing to the computer.

On the software side, get a copy of TMPGEnc Express.

There is an easy wizard that will allow you to export the entire DVD to a single AVI uncompressed file. It will even extract the menus and subtitles for you. I’ve used this software countless times and the results are excellent.

    Vince,

I downloaded and used the trial copy of TMPGEnc. I was able to rip a DVD and the preview with in TMPGEnc included good video and audio, but when I imported to Adobe Premier CS3 the audio did not show up.

    Any advice?

    Thanks

Make sure you try VOB2MPG as well, if you haven’t already. It converts VOB to MPG without re-encoding the video stream itself, and there is a free version.

VirtualDubMOD could be a free alternative to TMPGenc if you want to covert to AVI uncompressed. It’s less wizardy friendly gui though.

    Hi Ted,

You could try using your ripping software to rip an mp3/wav file of your DVD to then match up to the picture once in premiere.
Another good program for ripping DVDs is MPEG streamclip (https://www.squared5.com/)but if on a mac you will need QT pro installed if on a pc then you can use Quicktime alternative (https://www.filehippo.com/download_quicktime_alternative/)

Both are free programs. I have had good results with these programs and often rip have to rip the video and audio separately in order to import into premiere.

Thanks for all the info. Looks like I have it figured out with the TMPGEnc 4.0. I fixed the audio issue by making changing a setting in the program.
The quality looks great and sound also is good. I am going to convert from the free trial to the full program
