  • Need to rent a SDI capture card for SD

Posted by Bruce Feagle on November 4, 2008 at 4:55 pm

    Hi everyone,

I have a project that I need to capture from Digibeta via SDI with embedded audio for editing in FCS2. Does anyone know of a place that would rent such a card?

I looked into purchasing a card but the budget is just too small to facilitate it. Also, this is the first time I’ve needed to use SDI and I don’t see it coming in to play in the near future. All of my material has been coming in on MiniDV, DVCAM and HDV.

    Thanks,

    Bruce Feagle

Instead of a card you might be able to rent an AJA IO (or similar box). It has SDI in & out. There’s a smaller IO, too, but I don’t know if it does SDI.

    Thanks Shane.

I’m in southern CA. But the expense of another facility logging and capturing 16 90min D-beta loads would probably be as much as the budget for the whole post job. 🙂

    Thanks John,

That would work great if the price was right. Anyone out there have one they would rent for a few days?

Not necessarily. Call CloneTown @ 323-851-0299 (Universal City area) and Alpha Dogs @ 818) 729-9262 in Burbank.

For the price of rental, why don’t you buy one?

Why don’t you spend $295 dollars on a Blackmagic decklink card? I reallt can’t see how much cheaper it could be to rent one. You can use it in the future to give you SPDIF/AES audio monitoring, and send beautiful SDI video to one of the many inexpensive SDI monitors around now, instead of viewing everything analogue via DV deck.

    Thanks Jeremy,

This card is $800 and I would not have a use for it after this job.

I found a Kona 3 to rent for $75 a day. I need it for 2 days so at $150 to get through this job it’s a much better deal. I would rather buy a card that would be more forward thinking for my needs. Like one with HD capabilities. I would rather get an Intensity Pro as it would fit into my work flow better and is cheaper. Unfortunately, it has no SDI for this project. But it does have capability that I would use every day.

    Thanks Ben,

Try $75 a day to rent a Kona 3. I only need it for 2 days. Half the cost of buying something I would only use for one job. It would make sense if I had other SDI devices. But I don’t.
