  • Need to capture copy protected VHS tape. (have permision)

Posted by Larry Watts on November 1, 2006 at 5:12 pm

I’m using a Sony DSR-20 DVCAM deck and it won’t let me record a VHS tape that is copy protected.
We have permission for a TV program

What is a work around? Record to betacam sp? capture through the deck via firewire? – how?

We have a DSR-45 but I assume that is akso the same.

We’ve done this in the past. I just can’t recall how!

    thanks

Run the VHS signal through a RX II Digital Video Stabilizer. Under $30 anywhere.

If you have a camcorder that has pass-thru capabilties, that might work. I have occasionally used my Sony pd150 and feed s-video or composite input and audio from a vhs tape deck then take the firewire pass-thru output of the camcorder in to my sony dhr1000 deck and it will record the signal. It seems that camcorder somehow strips the protection.

Of course, it all depends on the protection scheme I guess. If you have a camcorder with pass-thru, it might be worth a try.

Macrovision works when two devices that recognize it are passing the signal through. This means that if you use a DV camcorder or other device that doesn’t have a Macrovision chip in it, to capture, you can do it just fine. I know the Canopus ADVC-500 capture/converter box allows you to turn off the macrovision.

perhaps the persons that gave permission would send you a non-macrovision copy of something better the VHS
