Need to brush up on some basics
I haven’t used Vegas in a little while (Pro 10), just a few questions.
1) How can I speed up or slow down a segment of video? For a fast-forward montage or the like?
2) How do you make it zoom in on a specific part of the video?
3) Let’s say I have split a video into three parts using the Split function, two big bits with a small bit in the middle which I don’t want in the video, but want to keep aside for later. If I wanted to render the two big bits, would I absolutely need to move the small bit and join the two big ones? Or is there a simpler way to micromanage parts of videos?

You can use the velocity envelope to speed or slow.
Right click on your event and go to insert/remove envelope and then velocity. You can change speed within the event with this.The other way is to hold down your ctrl key and stetch or reduce the event.
Pan/crop is how you zoom in. Use the keyframes if you want to zoom in and out during the event.
