    Hey, Y’all.

I’m an in house photog at an apparel wholesaler. We’ve got a full time studio with a half dozen folks using gear and props, plus a fairly large inventory of product going from corporate to the studio to location shoots and back and forth and whatnot.

I’d like to implement some kind of tracking system so the Merch Coordinators know where the product is at any given time, and also to help keep track of props and shared photo equipment.

I’m sure there’s gobs of options, but this is somewhat out of my area of expertise. Do any of you have experience in this area? Any starting points or recommendations you can give me?

I don’t know anything about cost, or database options, or equipment (like scanners or if we’ll need dedicated computers).

Ideally I’d like to tag all the photo equipment and props with info about where they should be kept and where they’re located if not there. And I’d like to have tags on product and then be able to know where they’re at (Merch storage, studio, on location, etc.) and if they’re in route, what box they’re in and when they left the last location.

Any help would be appreciated. Even if it’s just “I think my company uses suchandsuch.”

    Thanks so much!

That looks really cool. Not exactly what we need for 1000s of pieces of merch and props, but it’d be great for the photo gear we take on location.

This is a custom app written for production companies and edit facilities; it’s a “skin” that actually sits on top of and interfaces with good old Filemaker Pro. It’s been around a long time, and one of the functions, the “library” lets you tag and check-in/ check-out/ track every resource you care to label and enter into the system, from tapes and memory cards to cameras and grip gear, to props, etc. This software has a barcode module in it so all you add is the hand scanner and a label printer and you’re off to the races.
