need some explaining what to render as
I have read so much information on how to render video and I am still somewhat confused so if some one could help explain I would appreciate it. I have a video that I shot in sd (a friend’s wedding) and am confused on which way to render. Do I render as progressive or stay interlaced. Lines are showing in vegas preview window. I read that it depends on what type of DVD player it will be played on and what type of tv played back on (progressive or regular). So the question is do I need to know what type of DVD player and tv they have? If they have a regular SD TV and DVD player then it needs to be left as interlaced? If they have a DVD player that is progressive and TV also do I render as progressive? I am confused? Any help would be great. I am using sony vegas 8.

The preferred choices are MPEG-2 for video and AC-3 for your audio.
Use the default DVD Architect NTSC (or PAL) video stream or DVD Architect NTSC (or PAL) Widescreen video stream templates for your video and the Dolby Digital AC-3 Pro template for your audio.
Render both files to the same folder and make sure both have the same name.
That way, when you bring them into DVD Architect, the audio will automatically load as soon as you load the video.
Depending on the length of the video, you may need to customize the bitrate so that the video will fit on a single layer DVD.
I use the bitrate calculator found at https://www.johncline.com/bitcalc110.zip to help me determine the proper settings.
In a nutshell, if the video is less than 70 min. long, I use a CBR setting of 8,000,000.
Anything longer and I use the VBR numbers that I get from the calculator.
Rendering in Best mode and doing a 2-pass render are recommended as are using name brand DVDs such as Taiyo-Yuden or Verbatim. -
Great information. Thanks. Have another question however. What if I am not using DVD Architect but making a DVD straight from Vegas? Would I then need to worry about what they will be watching it on? Would I need to de interlace depending on what they have? What if they want to watch it on the computer then watch it on tv. Computer screen is progressive and say the tv is not. Would the computer screen show interlacing and the tv be ok? Would they need 2 seperate DVD’s rendered differnt ways? I’m sure that I am taking something very simple and making it complicated.

Donna, I’ve made several hundred DVDs over the years and have never worried about progressive vs. interlaced for this medium.
If it’s strictly for the web, the it’s progressive otherwise it’s interlaced.
Until the world’s last CRT TV set has died, I use interlace as I have no idea what the end user will be watching it on.
It plays just fine on a computer too so that’s why I never worry about it. -
