    Hello,

I’m an editor working in Los Angeles and i am trying to get some advice on the best way to upgrade my computer. I have a G5 Tower and my final cut pro is running really slow, as well as my other programs, and i’m just looking for some recommendations as to what hardware to buy and, if possible, where to buy it.

    Here are my specs:

    Hardware Overview:

    Machine Name: Power Mac G5
    Machine Model: PowerMac7,3
    CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (3.0)
    Number Of CPUs: 2
    CPU Speed: 2 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 512 MB
    Bus Speed: 1 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: 5.2.4f1

Thank you very much for your time and help.

A G5 is a pretty old computer at this point. I would highly recommend you purchase an Intel Mac. Especially since the new OS Snow Leopard will be Intel Mac only. 512 megs is far below the minimum that you should be using. Up it to at least 2 GB, preferably 4.

Thank you guys very much for your quick responses.

Richard Sanchez, I would love to get the new Intel, but i just can’t afford it right now. That would cost me at least another $2,000 right? I actually live in the valley myself and if you could recommend the best place to buy mac products in L.A. that would be great.

For right now i’m just trying to maximize the computer that i have, since i bought it about 2 1/2 years ago and it cost me $2,000 then. Any advice you could give me on how to do that, i.e. what type of memory cards to buy, the best place to buy them, would be great.

Again, thank you very much for your time and help.

I bought my memory upgrades from a place called Timeline Digital Inc (https://www.timelinedigitalinc.com/) along with a Cal Digit HD Element. I bought my Mac Pro used in the classifieds section of this page, but Power Max (https://www.powermax.com) sells used Macs.

I continue to work on a pre intel G5 with 4G of RAM, just finished a 104 minute HD Feature and it worked flawlessly, with my G-Tech eSata drives it rocks. I am in the process of buying a second system and will go all the way but the G5 works just fine. My G4 PowerBook circa 2004 also works better than ever, so the old adage if it aint broke . . . but do get what the two Dicks recommend, more RAM 🙂
