Need new HD I/O & Monitoring
Posted by Michael Harrington on August 13, 2009 at 11:50 amI’m interested in hearing from people using or with knowledge about the Matrox MXO2 and the Panasonic BT-LH1710 or 1760 Production Monitors. I’m looking for the most affordable solution without sacrificing quality.
Finally purchased my new Mac Intel a few months ago and now need to purchase new I/O & Monitoring to monitor HD. I produce and edit for broadcast and DVD sales with 50/50 SD and HD work, HDV for event type coverage with huge amount of footage to input and uncompressed HD for broadcast.

August 13, 2009 at 12:37 pmAlso look at the AJA Kona LHi and the FSI 1760W monitor. I’ve had the Panny monitors in here for testing and the FSI is a far superior monitor and at the lowest price point I’ve seen for a true Grade 1 color reference monitor. Where it really beats the the Panny is in contrast and black reproduction.

August 13, 2009 at 1:18 pmI have to say, you cannot go wrong with the MXO2 (not the mini). It’s awesome even with a standard HDMI LCD TV. Plus it’s portable in case you need to take it into the field. I also like that it not a card with a boatload of breakout cables hangin off the back of the machine.
Just my 2 cents

August 13, 2009 at 3:21 pmMichael, the Matrox MXO2 is an absolutely great unit … if you’ve any specific questions then feel free to ask away. If you plan to produce Bluray then you might want to consider the MXO2 “MAX” version which has a hardware H264 encoder built in. I’ve no personal experience of those Panny monitors though.
Best

August 13, 2009 at 3:47 pmThe Matrox MXO2 is great and portable, and works on laptops and desktops. The Kona LHi is also great and is desktop only. They have very similar features, and are in the same price range.
I too will also say that the FSI monitors are hands down the best you can get at the price. The 1706W blows the doors off the Panasonic.

August 13, 2009 at 6:13 pmThanks for the info and I’ll continue my research in the meantime can you tell me if Matrox is the same company that use to sell the D-Vision edit system in the late 90’s?

August 13, 2009 at 6:31 pmMatrox didn’t make D-Vision…that was another company. Yet another good editing platform that Avid overshadowed. But the lack of a 24 frame film workflow was their biggest drawback…

August 13, 2009 at 6:43 pm[Shane Ross] “Matrox didn’t make D-Vision…that was another company.”
But, Matrox did make one of the two board sets that powered D-Vision, the other was the Truevision Targa board set, later bought by Pinnacle.
[Shane Ross] “the lack of a 24 frame film workflow was their biggest drawback… “
It also didn’t help that they were bought by Discreet and then by Autodesk, both of which had bigger fish to fry.
For the record, one of the top developers of D-Vision was later hired by Apple after Edit* (formerly D-Vision) was end-of-lifed by Autodesk. The reason FCP made such huge leaps between Ver. 4.5 and 5.0 was the stuff he brought to the table from his days at D-Vision.

August 13, 2009 at 7:26 pmThank you, the name Matrox is a familiar one – a blast from the past for me. My x-company, Big Sky Post & Productions, purchased a D-Vision in the mid 90’s because of price point and we used it to show linear clientele the way to non-linear or at least non-linear off-line. Eventually bought a few Avids, Discreet Smoke, Flint, etc. and retired the linear bay. OF course now for less than 20K your in business with lots less wires.
The MX02 has just 2 channels Audio In, some of the work I do requires 4-Channel analog from Beta SP archival with split tracks, any work around? Using my 18-year old BVW-70, darn thing just keeps working. Also using DSR-80 with SDI and I see the MX02 has just 1 SDI in, is there a SDI A/B switch? Does the MXO2 require Gen Lock and does it have a black burst out for my Beta SP.

Not that I know of. Even the Kona LHe and LHi only have 2 inputs, as does the Decklink HD Extreme. I can only find 4 channels of XLR on a Decklink Eclipse.

Why do you need more? So you don’t have to swap out cables from multiple decks? This does 8 channels of embedded SDI audio.
[Michael Harrington] ” Does the MXO2 require Gen Lock and does it have a black burst out for my Beta SP. “
Genlock not needed for capture, but it does have it, REF on the box.

Which is why so many AJA users run the breakout box. Only two cables coming off the back of the machine with a much more user friendly I/O box for all connections.
