  • Need help with darkening one side of the frame

Posted by Tobias Schrenk on April 6, 2009 at 8:20 pm

    Hello,

because of some time problems we have a big problem in one of the last scenes of a short movie. The main actress is on the left side of the frame and you can see the right section of the room.

The right side is already a little bit darker than the part of the actress but some folks thought the are out of frame and walking around. It was the last shoot on a one day shooting so at the end no one noticed it.

Here is my question. Is there a way to darken the right side of the fram on a way that it looks some kind of nice and you can´t see the people ?

I am really thankful for any help.

    Thanks a lot

How about zooming up the frame and repositioning the bad side off the screen. Double-click the clip and in the Motion Tab in the Viewer increase the scale. Then in the canvas select Image + Wireframe. That allows you to move the image around in the Canvas.

I thought of this but I can´t zoom into the frame that much. It works a little bit but still you can see too much of the background

How about masking out the parts you don’t want with something like After Effects?

You could use Photoshop to make a gradient matte. Have it go from black on the right to white on the left. Put that on a video track above the problem clip and set the Composite Mode to multiply.

I use Joe’s Filters’ Soft Gradient, but you can build your own to suit.

In FCP in the Effects Tab > Generators > Render there’s a gradient generator. Works fine. Just tried it. Never knew it was there.

Just tried the gradients but it doesn´t work for me. Never worked with them. Could you explain me in a few words what I have to do with the Gardient generator ?

Drag the gradient generator to the track above the clip you need to fix. Change the Composite Mode (rt-click or ctrl-click to choose Composite Mode) of the generator to Multiply. Now you should see the two frames blended together in your monitor and the Canvas. If you need to move where the black is in the frame, set the Canvas to Image + Wireframe (3rd button to the right on the top edge of the Canvas window). Then with the generator track highlighted (selected) you can click and drag in the Canvas to position the gradient.
