  • Need help using HVX footage from FCP on AE CS3 PC

I’ve got some P2 DVCPro HD footage from an HVX-200 that was transferred using Final Cut Pro that I need to work on in After Effects CS3 on my PC. I use MacDrive to open up the same external drive that the media was captured to on the Mac on my PC. I try to open up the Quicktimes from the CAPTURE SCRATCH folder within the Final Cut Project, and either in Quicktime OR in After Effects on my PC they just show up white. Obviously I know it’s a codec problem, but I was wondering is there a codec I can get somewhere that will allow me to work with this footage without having to go into Final Cut and re-rendering it all, which would be a HUGE pain in the butt.

If in fact it does come down to that, and re-rendering all the footage is my only option, is there a batch way to do that so that I will get the same number of clips, instead of bringing each one down into the FCP timeline, setting In and Outs, and doing a Quicktime Conversion? Also, what would be the Export settings that I would need to use?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

i can’t help with the pc codec. i know there are some converters out there, but i think you’d be converting those p2 files to an avi or another file type which would still take about the same time as exporting files from fcp.

i would think that apple’s compressor would batch convert the files to say a lossless .mov, kind of the opposite of what compressor is designed to do (take a samll file and make it larger)… i haven’t tried that, but it seems like it should work.

another option would be to get the original p2 media in the native mxf wrapper. ae cs3 (with the 8.0.2 update) and later can import the dvcprohd clips in the native mxf wrapper without having to convert the files at all. it’s a bit smoother than fcp with the p2 files.

You can use DVfilm Raylight decoder to open DVCproHD clips on a PC. There is no conversion.
