Lately FCP 5.04 is acting a little weird. I have a project that has had it’s video files removed from a hard drive. Now when i try to open it it constantly asks for a missing file. When i cancel the request for searching for the file it pops up again, only to get canceled again. This can happen about 10 – 15 times before the project opens. Today however the project went all the way to the final window, indicating that i had missing media files, when FCP hung at that point. I tried it numerous times, I’ve tried installing the missing files and trying to link them when the windows poped up, I’ve trashed preferences, i’ve done everything I can think of besides re-installing FCP. I’d rather not go that far if I don’t have to. Can anybody tell me what’s gone wrong, or will anyone care to try opening the file on their system, to see if it’s the project file or FCP that is having the trouble. Thanks.

A couple of idiot tricks that might help:

    – duplicate your project in the finder and open the duplicate
    – open FCP by opening another projectfile from the finder. This way, you will find out if the problem is in the project file or in FCP itself.
    – If you are working on XSan, duplicate your media files onto a local drive and try reconnecting again
    – If any of the ‘missing media’ files are non-quicktime, try converting them first using compressor before ading them to your fcp project

    hope one of these helps

    Jan –

Thanks for the offer but fortunately i found a fix. Another editor suggested unmounting all my media drives and then try opening the file. It worked. Once open i saved to a different file name, remounted the drives and voila! I’m back in business. Thanks again for the help.
