  • Need help fixing HDV1080i and DVCPROHD 720p60 source footage

What’s the best (highest quality) FCP workflow (catpure and sequence settings etc.) for mixing DVCPRO-HD 720p60 and Sony HVR-Z1U at 1080i 60i in the same sequence?

The footage was shot with a VeriCam at DVCPRO-HD 720p60 and a Sony HVR-Z1U at HDV 1080i 60i.

The DVCPRO-HD is digitized at it’s native resolution and I do not have access to a deck to redigitize (unless I rent one).
I have a Sony HVR-M25U HDV deck but as far as I understand I am limited to digitizing at HDV.

I did some tests rendering the HDV footage to DVCPRO-HD and vice versa at both 720 and 1080. The HDV footage when rendered at DVCPRO-HD (either 1080 or 720, same result) is jittery. The DVCPRO-HD looks fine rendered at HDV 720 60i (which would require rendering the HDV smaller) and a bit fuzzy at HDV 1080i. I’d rather not render down from DVCPRO-HD and cut at HDV but the only solution I can think of is to output the HDV 1080i to either HDCAM or DVCPRO HD (both would require renting a deck which I’d like to avoid if possible) and redigitizing at DVCPRO-HD.

I’m hoping someone has a better solution.

Have you tried MPEG Streamclip to do a conversion instead of using FCP? Might be worth a shot.

Also, not sure if it would work, but if you have an HD capture card, can you capture the analog out of the HDV as DVCProHD?

I would suggest that you look into purchasing an AJA HD10AVA for you HDV machine, and that way you can digitize your footage at any resolution in any codec. I assume you have an HD capture card in your system. Cross-converting and changing i to p is always problematic in FCP unless you can digitze your footage in the same codec.

As for the price of the AJA unit, B&H sells it for just under $1000. That’s the price of a rental deck for one day usually.

I will never run my HDV deck in HDV in FCP. The workflow is awful and extremely slow.

    Wayne makes a good point

by brining in the HDV footage as 1080 DVCPROHD then the HDV footage will be easier to handle. I would recommend cutting the 2 types of footage separately then only rendering out to your final file. it is easier to make progressive footage interlaced than making interlaced footage progressive.

I’m purchasing an AJA HD10AVA. I didnt know it existed.
$1000 is a small price to pay to avoid editing HDV…

    Thanks, Wayne.
