  • Need Help Compressing 16:9 FCP Project to QT

Posted by Dan Herz on November 10, 2008 at 6:30 am

I need to compress a 16:9 1080p30p FCP project to an acceptably small QT movie for use on a website. My problem is that when I compress it using compressor, the final QT movie is squeezed and does not look good. I posted before and someone recommended that I change the “Geometry” in compressor. I am not sure how to do this. I attempted to change the geometry, but I was not able to open the dialogue box under geometry in a way that allowed me to alter the settings. If anyone can reply and give me some step by step instructions, I would really appreciate it.

    Thanks

    Hi Dan,
In this picture you can see the adjustments to do in Compressor or in QT so your picture will display 16×9.

Instead of those values (640×360) you can put any other that keep the 16×9 proportions:
    320×180, 400×225, 480×270,….
In Compressor you need to set the kind of pixels you want: Square.
In QT you don’t need because by default QT works with Square pixels.
In any case don’t forget de-interlace your clip.

I still need some help here. If I may…let me explain what I am doing and hopefully you can explain how to fix it.

    1) In FCP, I am selecting “Export using Compressor”
    2) Once inside Compressor I select the “Web” Folder and then select “Quicktime Compatible”
    3) I select H.264 800kbs & H.264 300 kbs
    4) Select Desktop as destination
    5) Submit

With these settings, I get squeezed video

I am assuming that I will need to select a compression format that allows me to change the settings because when I try to do it with the settings above, it does not allow me to change anything. So…Can you please walk me through the process starting at the point I went wrong? Sorry but I am a newbie at this.

    thanks

Once you drag the preset to the clip, double click the preset’s name (in that same window). Now you should be able to make all the changes you need. Go to the geometry window in the inspector and change your dimensions. You’ll be asked to save the changes as a new preset…do this if you want to….it’s a good idea to do that if you have multiple clips you’ll be exporting using the same settings.

ok…thank you, that info was very helpful. I still can;t figure out how to bring up the dialogue box to select “Deinterlace your clip”. Could you please tell me how to get there?
    Thanks

Check the top most drop down menu under “Frame Controls” in the inspector window.

You get that dialogue box when exporting using QT conversion.
