  • Need expert advice – Effect on keyed subject

    Hi all.

Been trying for the life of me to figure this out.

We have keyed subjects in After Effects and some are imported as video files already keyed exported out of Nuke.

We want to have an effect that appears show a shadow on one side of the subject without using lighting. Like a gradient fill.

    This is what I tried.

I took the video subject and precomp it. In that precomp I added my gradient overlay and created the shadowing effect I wanted.
On the main comp it shows that gradient effect on all the layers below it. It affected the background image.

Is there a way to apply an effect to only work on the non-alpha layer and not affect the alpha channels?

    Any advice is much appreciated.

Duplicate the original footage, put it above the precomp and assign it as the alpha track matte for the precomp. That makes the duplicate layer’s alpha channel function as a mask for the precomp layer.
