Need clarification on Twixtor (for AE CS5) frame rates source/output…?

Within AE, Twixtor can work directly from the original frame rate.
You can just drop the footage in the 24P timeline (comp settings 23.976) and set the Input Frame Rate slider in Twixtor to 59.94. If all you were doing is a frame rate conversion 60P to 24P, that is all you have to do.

You can also interpret the footage to 23.976 and in Twixtor then set Input Frame Rate then to 23.976. That will also work, that said, if you drop 59.94 into a 23.976 FPS comp.
To achieve the equivalent of “as if it was shot at 1000 FPS”, then even if you are in a 24P comp, the formula remains 59.94/1000.0 = a bit over 0.05 % for speed for “as if it was shot at 1000 FPS”. The 24P comp is only then defining the playback rate for the slowmo. That is as explained here, if you were in a 30P comp, Twixtor would generate more frames per second, and different ones but say at 5 seconds on the timeline the “slowmoed” action would be at the same place.

Thanks, Pierre, for the reply! I am in a bit of a jam, now, though… I created a 24P comp, dropped my Interpreted footage (Which is now 24P)

I wanted to do a cool ramp time effect (Like the movie ‘300’) BUT I noticed when I speed the footage up to realtime (250%) that there is significant warping of the footage going on, as if it’s still creating intermediate frames?! How can I fix this?

Did you change the Input Frame Rate slider in Twixtor to 23.976?
That is all is 23.976 (interp,comp settings and twixtor param?)
That should give you a null effect 2.5X slowmo

59.94 interp in and 59.94 in slider and 23.976 comp settings and speed 40% should also give you a null effect 2.5X slowmo

I figured what I’m probably gonna have to do is just do the real time and 40% speed stuff using Time Remapping, and then when I get to the super slow mo, just split the layer and work with only that section in Twixtor…

Did you every resolve this issue? I want to achieve a similar effect for a project I am shooting tomorrow on the 5D – essentially the 300 effect (realtime – normal 24p motion, which I then want to ramp down to slow motion, then back up to normal speed).

My questions is whether its best to shoot the whole thing in 60p, then just speed the parts I want to look normal up, or whether I should shoot at 24p and use Twixtor or time re-mapping to slow down the parts I want to be slow.

The main thing I’m worried about is shooting it all at 60p, and then not being able to get the parts that I want to look like 24p to ever look normal – were you able to get your 60p footage to look normal with time-remapping, because it sounded like you were having problems with Twixtor.

I have a related question for you, since you seem very knowledgeable about time-remapping.

I have a project in which I want to do the 300 effect: I want to have a clip play in normal looking 24 frames per second, and then, at key moments, slow down to slow motion (it doesn’t have to be extreme, just 2.5 times maybe), then speed back up to normal 24p.

My question is this: How should I shoot this? I’m shooting on a Canon 5D or 7D (I have both). If I shoot it all in 60p, will I be able to remap the 60p footage to look like normal old 24p footage, or will it look weird (choppy or home-video like)? Should I instead shoot it all in 24p and use time re-mapping/Twixtor to slow down the parts I want to be slow? I’m afraid this will result in some artifacting, since it is a fight scene that will have fast motion.

Essentially, I’m afraid that if I shoot it all at 60p, I’ll never be able to get any of it to look like normal 24p motion – if this is the case, I’d rather just shoot my slow motion and normal 24p as separate shots, and avoid the ramp effect.

Please advise if you get a chance!

I would shoot 60P the material that will be slow-mo if it’s an option. To match the 24P and 60P look, the slider “Motion Blur Compensation” at the bottom of Twixtor controls is a good option.
