  • Need advice on a minidv deck

I’m in need of a good basic mini-dv deck for logging tape, copying to vhs, and most importantly transferring to FCP on a mac G5 via firewire. I have used my dv cam but killed the transport mechanism and want to go with a deck. What’s the best solid, basic deck out there now? TIA!

I have a JVC SR-VS30E which has a miniDV and a VHS transport mechanism. It has a variety of inputs and outputs including firewire. I can capture straight from miniDV or capture from VHS tape (using the miniDV side of the deck as a pass-through) and I can dub from miniDV to VHS or VHS to miniDV (not that I ever do that).

I’m from Oz and bought my deck from Videoguys. See here for details:

Thanks! I had looked at this model but found many reviews of it complaining about the quality of it as well as compatibility with non-jvc mini dv tapes. If it does indeed work it would be the perfect deck for me based on price and the ability to dub to VHS. How extensively have you used it? Any complaints or issues with it?

    Hi
I like my Sony GV-D1000 MiniDV Walkman. It’s rock solid and has a monitor screen which many of the decks don’t. Powered by either AC or Sony M batteries. I already had 2 M batteries from an earlier camcorder that went bad on me.

Has Firewire, RCA and S-video. You can use it as a field monitor as well as a pass-through. Originally got mine from B&H Photo.

Thanks! I have been looking at the GV-D1000, the DSR-11, the DSR-20 and the JVC mentioned earlier in the thread and the D1000 looks like it is the best fit for me. Low price and reliable. Merry Christmas, by the way! – Jason
