Need a good work flow for 1080p24 to SD 29.97
Posted by Mike Turner on April 10, 2009 at 3:03 pmI am starting a job that will be shot XDCam 1080p24 and finishing SD 29.97 in 4:3 letterbox. I’m wondering if it’s better to edit in 1080, color correct, layoff to SD and re-capture, and then add graphics? OR, try working SD throughout. Any opinions appreciated.
Thanks,
MikeMike

April 10, 2009 at 4:38 pmWork in HD throughout, and then output to SD when done. Working in HD, then outputting to SD, then recapturing, then adding graphics, then outputting to tape. You are losing video quality with each step, and opening yourself to more possible issues. KISS…Keep It Simple Stupid. Less steps, less chance for error.
And future proof yourself for HD. Having an HD master of this is only good.

April 10, 2009 at 7:02 pmThat definitely makes sense and was what I expected. My only concern is Color’s HD render time might not fit into the client’s schedule. My thought was I could save the corrections and refinish it HD later if the client requested an HD master.

Then you need to educate your client about the workflow. An uneducated client equals a headache for you.
Spend the time, money, and effort to get your client to understand the limitations of the equipment you’re using. You’ll be glad you did.

April 10, 2009 at 8:50 pmANY color correction will need to be rendered. Just because the 3-way color corrector plays back in real time, doesn’t mean that it doesn’t need to be rendered before you output…it will. Any color you see, green, dark green, orange, red…needs to be rendered. It will render faster than Color, but Color gives you MUCH better control over the color correction that it is well worth it.
And you can always render overnight.
Plus, you have to color correct anyway…that was in your initial post. Whether it be in HD or SD…you still had color correction as an option.

April 10, 2009 at 9:01 pmWe plan on using Color regardless of SD or HD. I definitely see the benefit of finishing HD and down converting, but I have had some very heavy render times in the past and the last day of my schedule includes color, mix, re-assemble and mastering. Since we finish SD, I was wondering if the time saved on a SD color correction would be worth it.

WOW! All that in one day? I have one day for online prep and color correct, and then render that night. Then output prep (including getting the mixed stems from audio house) and then mastering. Then cleanup. Two days, and I don’t mix. And this is a 23 min show.
how long is yours, and do you do it all?
