  • Need a good inexpensive audio monitoring solution (SPDIF?)

Posted by Peter Corbett on December 15, 2007 at 4:21 am

I’ve been using the ASIO drivers to monitor audio from my Decklink HD Extreme, but I’m getting choppy audio payback on Vista 64 and Premiere. I notice the HD Extreme doesn’t have a dedicated SPDIF RCA monitoring output. Is the AES output the same (technically)?

Plus I’m thinking of buying either the Edirol 15’s or Behringer MS40’s for monitoring, although I’ve head mixed reports about both. Perhaps a simple domestic amp with coaxial digital in may be the answer?

Any advice or expriences gtratefully accpted.

I’ve been having the same issues and I’m using the decklink balanced outputs for monitoring on my HS50’s in conjuction with the Audigy, my verdict is that the ASIO driver in the Decklink, besides incomplete and buggy is only useful for capturing, I say this because in this website they state: “With support for Core Audio on Mac OS X

this is the cheapest answer, and also the most flexible.

Buy the Behringer Ultramatch Pro 2496. It’s $129 US, and it will convert anything to anything. This way, you don’t have to buy any new speakers/amplifiers, and if you change in the future, you can accomodate anything you want.

I use Roland DS-5 digital monitors via SPDIF with my Decklink Pro and they work a dream. Not sure about SPDIF outputs on Extreme cards, but the DS-5’s have a tonnes of outputs both digital and analogue, so would be worth looking into I reckon.

Good luck and let me know how you get on with your monitoring on the extreme…I was going to purchase a HD Extreme and was going to use the same monitors, but not if it’s ‘choppy’!

I went el cheapo and ordered a pair of Behringer MS40’s. I’ll give them a go to get me through Christmas. The Rolands look very nice, but a bit pricey. Thankyou everyone for the advice. Another example of the Cow’s value and friendliness.

The Rolands weren’t much more than the Behringers when I last checked…something like

I can’t say enough about this thing (Ultramatch Pro 2496). I use it in my FCP setup- it just works. Best value I think I’ve ever seen.

The behringer box has a great spec. I’m looking for a way to get 8-channels of analog monitoring from either HD/SD SDI or AES, aside from installing 4 of these boxes. Any suggestions? Price is a factor.

    Thanks.
