    Hi there,

I want to do computer screen captures lasting 10 to 60 minutes for training videos, then import and edit in Premiere or AfterEffects. Does anyone know of an at- or near-broadcast quality program or plugin that can record streaming video on a computer screen (video screen capture) to an .avi file at 29.97fps at 1920×1200 res without slowdowns, stuttering, or drop frames? Something that is comparable to Camtasia Studio 6 or Adobe Captivate, but without having the NLE capability built-in — which Premiere already has.

I’m trying to find something that captures at high quality only, and without all the bells and whistles of an editor; that’s what I plan to use Premiere and AE is for.

I post here in PremPro thread hoping someone w/Premiere has already done this. (And I’ve already searched and viewed the similar post of another Mike’s from 2006)

    Thanks, Mike

One challenge with screen capture involve the export codec. I use Camtasia and export using the free Lagarith codec and edit in Premiere.
Other challenges for you are the screen resolution of 1920 x 1280. I suspect you will have hardware challenges with that resulting in a very low frame rate if even 1 frame per second.
I have used Hypercam but have not tried it with the lagarith codec.

I don’t have enough experience with different cards and what they are capable of doing. Do you (or anyone else reading this) think a high-end video card, like ATI’s Radeon HD-5970, would do the trick? I didn’t think 1920×1200 would be that challenging for a high-performance card. Or possibly is it the limitation of Camtasia’s capture capabilities that impacts the frame rate?

The PC which I plan on using is Core i7-975, 12GB RAM DDR3, nVidia GTX280m 1GB GDDR3, and an Intel 160GB SSD drive. If necessary, the Radeon HD-5970 may be optional by using a PCI16 ExpressCard Adapter. Do you still think Camtasia6 capture at 1920×1200 and 29.97 may be questionable with this PC setup?

    Thanks.
