Las Vegas, Nevada, April 1, 2009 -David Rehr, President of the National Association of Broadcasters, today announced that his organization would be following the the lead of both Avid and Apple in 2008, and now Red Digital Cinema, to sit out the 2009 NAB Show scheduled April 17-23 in Las Vegas.

The National Association of Broadcasters, which has made a reputation for itself at recent NAB Shows as being among its own most popular booths, has announced that it will not exhibit at the 2009 NAB Show. According to an association spokesperson, NAB’s decision to sit out its own event this year comes on the heels of announcements by numerous other self-important organizations throughout the broadcast industry. According to one industry insider, NAB has high hopes that by saving a ton of unnecessary expense at its overpriced April event, the association might well be able to pay hugely inflated bonuses to its legions of well fed and over-payed top executives.

“well fed and over-payed top executives” and they are calling in sick at their major yearly sales event…

They must have got their ‘bailout’ already…..

Are they hiring …. I could use a job that is over paid and I don’t have to show up….

2 points for trying…. but this is a tough crowd

Las Vegas, Nevada, April 1, 2009 – A spokeswoman of the National Association of Broadcasters, announced in a terse two line press release today that following widespread surprise and dismay, and the possible pullout of other self-important organizations, it has decided to participate in the NAB exhibition this year.

“It will be business as usual” she said, adding that this year they expected an unprecedented attendance.

The exhibition is part of the 2009 NAB Show scheduled April 17-23 in Las Vegas.

[Neil Sadwelkar] “”It will be business as usual” she said, adding that this year they expected an unprecedented attendance. “

And speaking honestly of that, I have heard that the expected attendance is in the 60,000 range. Down from just over 100,000 last year.

On the one hand it’s not good for Vegas to lose 40% of the customers from last year. On the other hand it could be very good for those actually attending as you will have 40,000 fewer tire kickers to weed through.

That explains why hotels are doing better bargains than last year. In fact I get the feeling hotel rates have actually dropped in the past few weeks. I haven’t made my bookings yet. Flights have gotten slightly cheaper since last year too.

    Are you going Walter?

I just read that Sony has pulled out of IBC 2009. NAB this year will be minus Apple, Quantel and Filmlight. There are plenty of others left, of course, but I wonder is this the beginning of the end of trade shows in an ‘internetted’ world?

No, I won’t be there this year, though I actually kind of wish I was going to have the time to be there. Sounds like it will be a really fun one.

Nice photo you got there by the way. Looks like life it treating you well! 🙂

About 2 weeks ago I thought pretty much same thing that NAB attendance was gong to be down significantly. I was hearing 30-40%. Then about a week ago for no real reason tickets to SuperMeet starting spiking dramatically. Then I heard form others who were on the fence about going that they had decided to go. Not so much for the toys but for the people. The new toys were just a bonus.

What this means me thinks is what we have been preaching for months now; get out of the house and get your face in front of others. You never know who you are going to meet and if that person might change your life. The networking and social aspects of this show are now in the fore front and the NAB show runners know that and are promoting it as such. The word “community” it seems is being thrown around much more than the phrase “trade show.”

Good point. That’s what I’ll miss the most, meeting people and seeing old friends.
