NAS forum request
Posted by John Heagy on March 27, 2013 at 2:27 pmWith 10Gig ethernet becoming more and more affordable a forum to discuss NAS deployments and offerings would be nice.
The SAN – Storage Area Network forum is a not the place to discuss NAS.

March 28, 2013 at 6:03 pmIf I may be so bold… The two should be merged into: “Storage: shared”.
Reason being, people usually don’t come looking specifically for NAS or SAN, they come looking for shared storage for collaborative production and post production workflows. NAS might work for them, or it could be a SAN, or it could be a hybrid solution that can do both.
There might be one other reason, that SAN is a misnomer, a concept taken from general IT that somehow acquired that “shared” meaning among creative professionals, which isn’t really part of it. SAN isn’t shared storage, it’s a way to connect storage as if it was local, over the network. The fact that it’s not local, doesn’t make it “shared” on a file level, you still have to add a “NAS” component to it to make it so, just like with any given hard drive.
It seems that people usually mean “SAN with a file sharing system on top” when they speak of SAN in the video world – which isn’t SAN in its original meaning.
