Hi there, I’ve been contemplating attending NAB this year, it’d be my first time. The reason I’m thinking about going is mostly because supposedly, for the $900 fee for a conference in the Post Production section, you get 6 days of Apple Training in Final Cut Pro and Motion. The first 2 days are training and exams for fcp level one, and then days 3 & 4 are training and exams for level two, and then the last two days are for training certification in Motion. Now, if I were to take these classes in NYC, which I live close to, thru Future Media Concepts, it’d be close to $4500 for all 3 certifications.

Am I understanding all of this incorrectly? Has anyone here done this? Are the classes any good? Also, here’s a biggie, should I even bother with Certification? I have the book they give you in the classes, and have been further teaching myself with it. I am a recent grad with a 2 year degree in radio/tv, and we were taught some fcp there as well. I love being proficient in it however.

    Thanks for any input.

    Sorry Lisa

Each one of the Certification classes is priced separately, you DO NOT get all 3 for that low price.

Each class of the 3 is priced separately , and yes it is less than going to FMC’s facility in NYC since they can offer the sessions to considerably more people at one time
( 3 years ago they set a record with over 250 people in one FCP 101 Class at NAB)

    Lisa,

In my opinion NAB is not conducive to training, its very loud, and quite hectic.

If you are new to the app and can pass the level 1 cert in two days, and the level 2 cert two days later you must either have an eidetic memory or the instructor is feeding you the questions and answers. Cramming that much into six says is ridiculous. The basic FCP class is three days, and Apple recommends the comprehensive FCP introduction, which is five days. The minimum class for beyond the basics is three days. That’s eight days, without Motion. You can’t do the two FCP instruction books in four days unless you’re being coached to the test. And the new Motion in two days is really pushing it. If you’re a normal student, or even very bright, your chances of passing those tests are barely better than zero.

    All the best,

    Tom

But not the classrooms. Remember Apple doesn’t have a booth so classes will be in the regular classrooms which are away from the show floor and much quieter.

As for certification, unless you plan to go into teaching the app, I don’t see any reason for it.

I tend to agree with Walter on certification.

When you go to get a job, if your boss is smart, they will be able to check your FCP knowledge before they hire you.

If your boss is not smart, you probably don’t want to work for them.

There are a lot of great learning materials out there, and I don’t think the official Apple Pro Training Books are the best of them.

A good place to start: search postings by this forum’s leaders, read their posts, and see who has clearly written answers. Then see if that cow leader has any training materials available and buy those.

Think of it as a kickback for all the answers they give away free.

Like Shane Ross’ DVD on getting organized in FCP. That’s a must-own for any FCP editor.

Actually Apple WILL have their classroom on the show floor. It will be in someone else’s booth obviously but they will have a classroom. Can’t say where yet until the ink is dried. Course anything can happen between now and then.

Well that’s completely silly. They should just put the classes off the show floor where you can actually learn without the show going on.

You are reading me wrong. This is same Apple classroom they always have on show floors. Its not a certification classroom.

Ah, well that still doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me, but what do I know? I’m just an editor. 🙂
