    Hello,
    I am doing my degree project and try to see the transformation of a letter when it goes from 2D to 3D. The two-dimensional world has an incredible number of fixed rules and a clear system to relate to. This I have not revealed in the three-dimensional world.

    Right now I’m looking at what happens when you give a character a depth. What are the different parameters, I can take into account and so on.

    I have chosen text-spline and deposited my letter in an extrude-NURBS. What I then see as an opportunity to guidelines is three things. The extrude-NURBS can I choose the “type”, I have the opportunity to three choices (n-gons, Quadrangle and Triangle). Can someone in a pedagogical way to explain to me what the difference between these are and how they arise, what is it that determines its various functions?

    What you’re talking about are the extrude caps options. The caps are the front and back … flat portions of the object. ngon simply refers to a polygon of more than four sides, so if you choose the (default) ngon option, the front and back surfaces will each be comprised of a single ngon. Or so it seems!

    In truth, however, ngons in Cinema and most 3D applications are just combined triangular faces with the edges hidden. Why is this important? Well, it comes into play if you want to use a deformer on your extruded object. Say, for example, you want to bend an extruded letter, or series of letters with the bend deformer. If you are using ngon caps, you will get a strange looking result because triangles C4D employs to make up the ngon probably won’t be conducive to bending (large, or long triangles).

    That’s why the other options are there. If you the quadrangles option Cinema tries to make the caps out of four-sided faces, to the extent possible. This option, and the triangles option, also gives you the option to specify how *many* polygons are used in the caps. The more subdivided the caps are, the better the object will deform.

    Also, if you select the Extrude Object and change the parameters, you can see the structural differences of each option on your object.
