  • My video layer appears through several opaque layers!

    Hello,
I am essentially trying to build a 3D television. I have a layer of video with several black solid layers behind it, however when the camera moves around and behind the “TV”, The video layer pops through the back at random (in reverse of course).
The 3D video layer is in front of 8 black solid layers(each 1 pixel apart in Z space). That comp is placed into a “TV” set Comp. And then that is placed into a location comp with an animated camera.
I have no clue why the layer would flicker through 8 solid layers at full opacity when viewed from behind.
Just to rule out all the obvious diagnosises:
1)all of my compositions and layers are 3D and colasped
2)my black layers are at 100% opacity.
3)the final comp has a fully animated camera and environment, and everything looks as expected normal, except the video flickers through the back of the TV at random.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks,
    David

1 pixel is not enough Z-depth separation. Minimum is 3 pixels for AE’s scanline renderer to work properly.

    Wow,
I tried experimenting with my comp to see how far back the black solid had to be from the video layer to block the video from shining through on the back side. I had to be 13 pixels back on the z axis from the video layer to properly block the video from leaking through. I’ve run into similar problems in the past when trying to place two planes ontop of one another, but I was never aware that After Effects has such a deficiency with layered layers in 3D space.
I increased my layers of black behind my screen from 8 to 13 and that cleared it up while still giving my screen a feeling of depth

    thanks for the help,
    David

I thought I had this problem solved by just placing more layers further back in Z space, but I now have 20 opaque solid layers behind the video layer. Each layer is one pixel further back in Z space. But I am still getting video to flicker through at certain angles on the reverse side!

What the heck is going on?
