My only guess is that Panasonic is counting on the cost of memory dropping drastically very soon?

That’s quite surprising. AFAIK all hdtv-channels feed their delivery systems from d5hd-TAPE or hdcamsr-TAPE.
And they have just purchased or they are just purchasing those decks, so I believe they will be used for about a decade… -

Hmm, manufacturers reps making unsubstantiated claims against a competitors product here on the COW – is that right?
Can’t say I’ve noticed these MASSIVE atrifacts myself. You have a revolutionary camera coming out soon that should be a big success for you, and even some of us lowly, tape stuffing HDV owners are very interested in buying one, but I don’t think you need to be saying stuff like this, cheap shots are just that – cheap!

August 19, 2005 at 2:41 pmIt would be nice, if Panny would back up these claims by showing off some material shot with dual-cam rig (some hdv and hvx200)…

These reps(and other so called MINI HDV gurus) should stop once and for all
stop raving about how fantastic HDV “toys” are compared to true HD and even decent SD broadcast cameras. This should be made very clear:
HD is not HDV,HDV 1/3′ toy is not comparable to ANY 2/3′ video SD camera on market….
To Sony,Panasonic and other reps(as well as Forum Leaders),if they want to sell High End gear, they should explain very clearly the difference between
different formats as well as different camera equipment.
I am tired of reading some stupid posts about how good Z1 is compared to Cine Alta…these posts are usually written be “gurus” who have never owned decent equipment in their life.
Steve,my comments are not directed to You.

These kinds of claims have been happening since the advent of this industry and they always happen with the roll-out and introduction of any new system or technology. People get enthusiastic about it and begin getting excited. It’s rare that in 10 years of doing this, that I have found anyone maliciously or intentionally trying to mislead people — oh, it happens but I could could them all on my hands. (Which isn’t bad, considering that we’ve been at this for a decade now.)
There is absolutely nothing different about this than when it happened every other time it’s happened in the past. People get passionate and as artists, passion should be something that we see in ourselves and maybe even learn to tolerate in others…
You are NOT going to convince anyone that you opinions are right by calling their tools “toys” and angering a pool of people and pissing them off accomplishes absolutely nothing.
Even one of the most knowledgeable forums in the Cow, which I consider to be the Discreet Edit forum, will argue and argue what is wrong with FCP (for example), all the while editing on a system which runs under Windows NT 4.0 and which because of this, has to have major workarounds just to work with DV footage. But I do not go in there and tell them that they are wrong. Why bother? People are entitled to think what they wish about the tools they use and can afford.
If I owned a Z1 (since that’s the one you pick on most often), I sure as heck wouldn’t be sitting around telling myself that it’s a pile of crap, where’s the sense in that? — especially when I have to have some confidence in myself and my tools the next time I have to make a sales presentation.
I do not argue for a second that the Z1 is comparable to a CineAlta or that the new Panasonic will do all that a VariCam can do. They are different cameras.
But if I were using CineAltas and/or VariCams, then I also as sure as eggs as eggs, wouldn’t be hanging around this forum and the HDV forum insulting manufacturers reps, leaders and users trying to disparage people all the time. What is the sense in that??? Do you honestly think that you are going to change people’s opinions talking to them like that???
For levity sake: The first one who writes me at ron@creativecow.net and tells me where the song title “As Sure As Eggs Is Eggs” comes from, gets a free copy of the new Strawbs album CD that Kathlyn and I produced.

August 20, 2005 at 7:54 amI meant delivery to the consumer. Mass distribution. Tape is not now, nor likely ever will be, an option for that.
Obviously handing over HDCAM, D-5, or DVCPRO-HD tape to a broadcaster is a viable solution for that particular need, but I meant distribution to the end consumer.

August 22, 2005 at 7:57 am“…course how do you get it into the computer i’m sure is another cost.”
The P2 cards are in the PCMCIA form factor. If you have a laptop, insert the P2 card in the side and your done. It’ll show up as a disk. drag the file where you want it to go and thats it.
One thing I’m impressed with here in the Pana design is this compatibility. PCMCIA is wide spread and cheap

The danger with no one speaking up is that deliberate misinformation will eventually become “ground in stone” unless someone speaks up to dispute the statements made.
There are always two sides to a story theirs, ours and the truth. Which one you believe depends on what your objectives or agenda are.
Misinformation spread solely for the sake of increasing sales is equivalent to laying rotten eggs.
