I don’t know if my firewire can sense my disdain, but here is an odd problem.

    1. New computer 64 bit, running vegas 8 in x86 mode
    2. Had to install netframework etc. on 64 bit
    3. I have firewire external hardrives that I connected once to a networked 32 bit computer ( my old system) and then changed them over to the 64 bit. Had odd recognition problem from the 64 bit computer where the drive did not show up, but then it did again, so I didn’t think much of it.
    4. Cut to excitement and ready to attach firewire device for capture. I believe it worked first try, I caputured some stuff ( getting older and have been messing with this long enough I cannot remember)–it could have not worked initially and I just transfered footage from old workstation).

But Then I get this problem. Neither the old computer (x86 or the new computer 64 bit xp recognize any firewire device now.

Original firewire work on 64 bit was through system firewire, so I purchased new pci x express firewire card. Nothing. So now no firewire devices work on any of my computers—except this old camcorder that I borrowed that was identical to my old camera that once was recognized and is no longer.

I have dealt with firewire issues before, but now I am simply stumped, my spirit is crushed. I have tried multiple cords on multiple computers and nothing. A few different devices were recognized but then no longer.

Network 1394 stuff was disabled with no effect
Tried unplugging all, and repluging nothing
Tried camcorder on an off, nothing. No conflicts noted.

Any possibility xp could somehow affect the camcorder or change its properties?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Just a direction would be nice.

What is the error code in device manager associated with the 1394 device (or are firewire devices even showing up)? Of course, 64 bit OS’s are not supported currently but it does not make any sense why you cannot get firewire to be recognized on your xp 32 system. Have you tried uninistalling the firewire card and reinstalling it via device manager?

Firewire can burn out your firewire port on your cam and card as its ground is not like the ground in the USB. The USB grounds first then makes contact with the other leads. You may have burnt it out. Can you hook up your camera to anything else to see if it is recognizable?

Any more details you can provide?

First off, let me thank you for your willingness to help!

You wrote: What is the error code in device manager associated with the 1394 device (or are firewire devices even showing up)?
Answer: No error is demonstrated in the device manager. It is all reportedly working fine.

You wrote: Of course, 64 bit OS’s are not supported currently.
Answer: Correct. I would not take issue if it was not a widespread problem.

You wrote: but it does not make any sense why you cannot get firewire to be recognized on your xp 32 system.
Answer: Agreed. I am not new to the issue of firewire for sure.

You wrote:Have you tried uninistalling the firewire card and reinstalling it via device manager?
Answer: I can try, however I doubt it is an issue.

Answer: This is frankly my biggest fear. I have hooked both cameras up to a seperate laptop and they were not recognized, however the laptop recognized same make and models camcorder.

Tried disabling network 1394 every which way which didn’t change anything.

I have not hooked up another camera to the system because I have been afraid of causing the same problem to the camera I hook up.

I am open to testing if you have any recommendations. Any suggestion to determine the burned up cam firewire problem?

It is a Panasonic AG dvx 100b dv cam. No drivers need to be installed that I know of. I will try one other option I can think of which will be to hook it up to another laptop and another firewire device up to another laptop.

Thanks again for suggestions or even trying.

John, your experience is similar to one I am having, and I’m thinking I may have fried a firewire port. I attached my ADVC-300 analog-digital converter device into the same computer I have used it with for the past 4 years, and the computer failed to recognize the device. I then connected my video camera to the same computer and it was instantly recognized.

I contacted Canopus tech support and they sent me some tests to run to determine if the ADVC-300 was damaged. The test results indicate it is in fact damaged.

I was not aware of the grounding issue with firewire until reading here, but I see now that in Canopus’ instructions they tell you to turn off the camera, ADVC-300, AND the computer before making the firewire connections. They don’t explicitly mention grounding issue, but it seems logical that is why they recommend powering everything down.

If you decide to hook up your camera to your computer, you might want to follow Canopus’ advice and turn off the computer and camera before connecting.
