    hi everybody.

i’m not sure this is the right place to ask, but i just want to get a confirmation on what i think i already know. i’m used to working with video on linux and with raw dv files. when i capture DV footage from my camcorder with vegas, within a DV-NTSC project, and the files are auto-split into DV-NTSC .avi type II files, i just want to make sure that these files are really just raw dv data encapsulated with an .avi header.

is that right? as i understand it, raw .dv files captured over firewire are identical to dv .avi files captured over firewire (as long as the projects are governed by identical settings) except for the header data, and there is no additional encoding going on under the dv .avi process. let me know if i’m way off base.

    thanks a bunch in advance.

That’s correct. The information that’s on miniDV tape is digital, i.e. a bunch of 0s and 1s. It’s the NLE that converts it into the appropriate file format. In the case of most PCs, that’s AVI. For a Mac, it would be MOV format.
