My 1st time — be gentle — 3d distance Perspective
This is my first time venturing into the “expressions” forumn — and let me tell you, I’m more than a little intimidated…
My idea of a challenging expresion is pickwhipping a layer to a null!!
Here’s my dilemma:
I motion tracked a nighttime exterior shot of city skyline and I attached the tracking data to a layer of the moon.
Now the moon is locked perfectly to the night city skyline.
But I would much prefer to add some perspective to the moon — It is obviously much further away than the buildings and would move in its own parallax…
I was once told there was a way to make that Moon layer 3d and attach the tracking data to the camera somehow then move the moon back in 3d “Z” space so it moves in proper perspective?
(a) Would that work and how would I do it?
(b) Is there a better way??

You could try this script:

You would need to have 2 layers to drive the ‘Parallax Null’ so I would recommend creating 2 Nulls, apply the motion tracking data to one of them and place the other at the theoretical vanishing point of the scene. Then run the script to create the Parallax Null, using the first 2 Nulls as input, and parent your Moon layer to it. You can adjust the amount of parallax with the slider on the Parallax Null (the slider’s range is 0-1).
