I’m using the Canon C200 and have been looking into the XF-AVC codec instead of MP4. It has some benefits like better quality audio (24bit vs 16bit), a bit more metadata, and unique file names.

But, the fact that Mac OS doesn’t natively read MXF files in Finder is a real downside. It’s so useful being able to see thumbnails and Quick Look footage right in Finder (I’m on High Sierra).

So, the goal is to be able to preview and Quick Look MXF files in Finder. Apple has a Pro Video Formats update that I think would do the trick, but it requires having Final Cut, Motion, or Compressor, which I don’t.

Does anyone know if there’s a way to get those codecs so they can manually be placed in the Library/QuickTime directory? Or is there some other solution I’m not thinking of?

    Hello Patrick

I realise this is an old thread but as I’m in the same situation I wanted to check if you’ve found a solution. I’ve tried installing the Pro Video Formats and that makes MXF files play in QuickTime but they won’t be recognised by Davinci Resolve. I’ve also tried installing Final Cut Trial, which supposedly also adds MXF support, but that also didn’t make Davinci recognise MXF files.

    Thanks in advance

    Hey Philip,

Apple and everybody else has retired Quicktime (sadly).

Out of interest, are you on Davinci free, or the studio version?

If on free, you might not be able to import it.
This thread over on Blackmagic could be of interest to you:

    Hope this helps?

    Hej Mads

Thank you very much for replying and linking to that thread. I will try rewrapping the file to see if it lets me import the files into Resolve (yes it’s the free version). It’s no biggie if I have to stick to MP4. I believe image quality is the same but it’s the slightly better audio I was looking for, plus the metadata.

    Best wishes

    Philip

I’m surprised that DaVinci won’t read your MXF files. What camera is the footage from?

Thank you for replying, Patrick. It’s from an XA70 camcorder, shot at 1920×1080 resolution/25fps/45Mbps with 2-channel audio. I’m trying to import it into the free version of Davinci 18.6 on a Mac running Monterey. The pro video formats is listed as installed in System Information.
