  • MXF footage, edited in Premiere CS4. Best way of sending it to Apple Color?

Hi. I am a student and am preparing footage to grade on Apple Color.
The director edited it on Premiere ‘Pro’ CS4, and I want to know the best way to send it to Color.

I tried exporting EDLs but I open them and they have timecodes like 02:34:36:26 (while this is 25FPS footage and everything is set at 25FPS).
I cannot import the EDL to Final Cut Pro, or to Color. When exporting, I don’t know where to choose the format (I want CMX 3600).

What should I do with the MXF files? Use Compressor to convert all the shots to ProRes? How do I set it to keep the same timecode?

    Thanks,
    Rodrigo

FCP won’t work with MXF files natively anyway they need to be converted to a QT mov wrapper first, so you’re out of luck using this type of media.
Premiere Pro has some powerful color correction tools (Fast Color Corrector, 3-way color corrector, broadcast safe)…
If you can get your hands on After Effects, you can do your color corrections by importing the Premiere Pro project and using Color Finesse plug in which is similar to the color controls.

    Thanks for the answer Jon.
I am very used to Color and Scratch (which I cannot use now because I will do this grading at home).
This grading has to be done in a short time, and there are specific things that I need to do with Color and I don’t know if I’ll be able to do them with Color Finesse (because of its tools and also because of my knowledge).
Apart from that, I want to give a chance to Premiere Pro CS4 before saying that it’s not a professional application. I cannot believe I am not able to export a simple EDL.

    Regards,
    Rodrigo

You can export an EDL. FCP and PPro EDLs are not the same. CMX edl is the standard and that is what PPro uses. If the Project and the footage itself was PAL (25FPS) then the EDL should reflect that. Are you sure the Editor was working in PAL (25fps) with PAL (25FPS) clips?
FCP should be able to import an EDL and ask what frame rate it is.
I’ve done this many times before.

PS: what things are you trying to do in Color?

I am sure that all the clips are 25fps and the project is 25fps. I did another project a time ago, which was also 25fps and had the same problem. It was tortuous for the operator/colorist to re edit every shot in Scratch.
The EDL has some timecodes like (xx:xx:xx:)26 or more than 25.
I am using the Mac version of Premiere,… I’ll ask my friend to export an EDL in his computer.

I want to use many secondaries, masks, trackings and things like that. Unfortunately I don’t have experience with AfterEffects or Color Finesse to be able to do that quickly.

    Thanks,
    Rodrigo

FCP and other FCS applications can be enabled to import native MXF.

What is the format you’re dealing with here, P2?

    P2, yes.
I can import MXF but cannot make a working EDL from Premiere.
I decided to export to TIFF from Premiere, and then grade it in Color.

    Thanks,
    Rodrigo
