    Hey all!

I often receive music tracks from the audio post house we use. When I drop them into Final Cut they often sound distorted at the high end. Like they are peaking but in the mixer they never go over 0 dbs. I assume the files they are giving me are good.

If I drop them down to about -10 dbs they sound much better. Is this normal or am I missing something? I guess it just seems like a CD quality sound file should sound nice unless it goes over 0 dbs. But I’m obviously not a sound guy!

    Thanks!!!

    James,

Audio for CD is mastered to peak at (and often *average* at)0dB, whereas audio in videoland is much happier around -12, peaking around -6. So what the audio dept is giving you is fine, you just need to pad it down to make your sensitive video systems happy.

    Cheers,
    S

I use -15 for CD tracks right off the bat. I use the normalize gain function to do this en masse before even listening to them.

Yeah, try lowering the audio as the other post had said.
Also, make sure that you aren’t importing it as a compressed file such as MP3. Instead, be sure to use an uncompressed format such as AIFF, which can easily be created by opening the audio file in quicktime pro, selecting Fie>Export>Sound to AIFF

I find that MP3 tends to do some skipping, even after rendering, when being edited in FCP. I dont know if its just my system or if its a normal thing, but that’s just my experience.
