Multiple machines working with the same file

You need to have the project and all files on an external HDD. The HDD needs to be setup with a dedicated Letter that won’t conflict with any other systems HDDs.

Goto> Start button>Control Panel>Performance and Maintenance> Admin Tools> Computer Management> Disk Management > Find the Drive Right Click on it and change Drive Letter and paths. Set the Letter. (ie: Z)

Everytime the ext HDD loads into someone elses computer it will always be looking for the file directory inside the same HDD path name.

Can I ask three more questions?
1. With the example you give using an external hard drive, are you saying unplug and move the drive to the other computer when you want to change machines?
2, If so, is there a way to use shared storage – NAS or SAN – to do the same thing over our internal network?
3. Are there issues of speed using an external hard drive – firewire/USB vs eSATA/SATA/SAS?

Yes…

I’ve not done it personally, but I’m sure if the network drive is being used with the same HDD Name (letter) on all drives and is seen on all workstations through the same drive path it should work. You can’t save project over a network tho. That has to be saved on the HDD directly connected to the workstation (why an Ext. HDD solution works so well).

3. Are there issues of speed using an external hard drive – firewire/USB vs eSATA/SATA/SAS?
I use Firewire Only as they can be daisy chained to each other and I never run out of ports, unlike USB. USB 2 is the only version of USB worth using for Video, but even then it’s not that great. Most Pro Editors will tell you they use FW only. eSATA sounds great, never used it though.

I save PPro project files to a shared network drive (on a fileserver) almost daily. You may have reasons for saying otherwise…
I do keep media files local.

The only way to get reliable media playback in a networked situation would be with a SAN of some sort. Not for the faint of heart or faint of wallet.
