multiple firewire ext drives available on network?
friend has a couple of G5’s and wants to be able to access about 6 or 7 lacie 600GB firewire-800 drives from both machines. Currently they are daisy-chained to a single G5.
what would be the best way to do this? He wanted to go for an Xsan solution but doesn’t have the cash. Hopefully he won’t have to remove the drives from their casings either.
he also wants to be able to access these drives from laptops that might join the network ad hoc

Firewire drives cannot be mounted on more than one machine at a time.
The only way to have shared storage is thru the use of fibrechannel RAIDS and a SAN network. You MIGHT be able to pull it off with the hard drives on a gigbit ethernet network, if it is only DV footage. Either have the drives connected to one G5 and enable sharing on that G5, or get Ethernet storage. But that again, isn’t gonna be stable and will most likely drop frames. That type of network is meant for data, not media.
The only stable networking storage is fibrechannel and XSAN, SANmp, SANbox or metaSAN. Not one is a cheap solution.
