multiple clips in fcp5 w/HDV and I only want one.
Posted by Paul Boyer on January 31, 2006 at 6:34 pmFCP 5 automatically takes my HDV footage and upon batch capture, creates multiple clips each time the cam starts & stops, when I only want one large clip per tape. I’ve selected “warn at end of capture” when it asks abotu timecode breaks, but it still breaks into multiple clips. It even does this during a “capture now” when I would normally get only one clip.
Anyone Anyone? I’m at a loss here.
Thanks again.

January 31, 2006 at 8:45 pmYou’ve just found the HDV bug! Sorry….. there is only one way around this bug. Don’t digitize in HDV. I know…. how do you do that? You’ll have to have a converter like the Miranda or Convergent Design boxes to digitize in DVCPRO HD or any other HD format. HDV and FCP are not very friendly but something tells me that at NAB, they will become more friendly.

That’s not true, if you uncheck “make new clip on start/stop” in the capture window it actually stops most of the start/stop breaks.

January 31, 2006 at 9:28 pmI’ll keep trying everything. I can’t have 600+ mini clips in my browser. Thanks

January 31, 2006 at 9:48 pmI can’t find that check option in the capture window. I searched the manual and it tells me that capture now will bring the clip in as one, but even when I digitize using capture now … it splits the clips. I have the “warn after capture” option to keep it one clip, but this is creating clips on start/stop data. Can you tell me where the “start/stop” option in the capture window is? I’m not seeing it. FCP 5.02
Thanks, Right now I’m afraid I’ll end up buying that convergent design boxs that’s probably advertised on the right.

January 31, 2006 at 9:59 pmPaul,
I’m in the middle of running compressor so I can’t check on my machine but check under “system settings” under “Final Cut Pro” at the top.
I’m pretty sure there’s a capture settings” tab there and that’s where you’ll find the “make new clip on start/stop” box that Steve is telling you to uncheck.

January 31, 2006 at 10:11 pmI’m not sure when it was introduced, it may have been 5.03 – it’s certainly there on my system.
Look in the Clip settings tab in the capture window, it’s directly below the audio meters.

January 31, 2006 at 10:14 pmNope. It’s under “user preferences” – general tab.
“Abort capture on dropped frames On timecode break_” change “make new clip” to “Warn after capture”.
Not sure how it works with HDV. I’m an SD guy.

January 31, 2006 at 10:23 pmNo it’s not!
When you capture HDV you get a whole NEW capture window that you don’t get in SD, this is where the checkbox is

February 1, 2006 at 5:27 pmSteve is right, I upgraded last night and now the checkbox is there. I’ll test it later to day and confirm, but it is there, right where he said it should be. I’m now running 5.0.4.
Thanks all, more later
