Multiclip w/ DVCPRO HD & AVCHD
We just recently upgraded to the Panasonic HPX170 and love the P2 format. It has worked out great for us. We were looking to get another one so we could do more multicam shooting, but are on a budget and need to downsize a bit if possible. We can across the Panasonic HMC40 which shoots on the SD cards and is imported into FCP as AVCHD. What would be the process to use both codecs in a multiclip in FCP? Am I going to have to convert at least one of the clips to match the other? I would like to avoid this if possible since it would be adding a few hours to the project each time. Does FCP 7 offer any kind of multi codec multiclip integration?

No they have to be the same format. I’d choose ProRes for both.

Thank you! Is there a way to import as pro res from the P2 card using log and transfer? Or will I have to transfer it in as DVCPRo HD then convert to Pro Res?

WIth DVCProHD P2 there is not trancoding (just rewrapping) the codec in QT so you would have to bring that in and then transcode it in Compressor to ProRed to transcode the AVCHD to DVCProHD since it would only be a half the amount of footage. If you are doing a lot of this type of work I would suggest getting matching camera (or a used HVX200 to save a lot of transcoding time.
