  • Multicam with Cannon XH A1 and Canon 5D mark II

Posted by Andy Bentley on June 16, 2010 at 9:16 pm

I would like to setup a multicam edit with footage shot on a Cannon XH A1 and a Canon 5D mark II however I get an error based on pixel shape.

The footage off the Canon 5D mark II uses H264 and is 1920 X 1080 and the footage off the XH A1 is 1440 x 1080.

I’ve done some research and realize this has to do with square vs. non square pixels. My question is can something be done within either of the camera presets or in Final Cut capture settings in order to have them in sync?

BTW This site has been a great resource for me. Thanks to all that lend their expertise

For a multicam to work, all sources need to match exactly. Codec, frame rate, frame size…everything. you can’t multiclip H.264 and HDV, you can’t multiclip ProRes if one is 1440×1080 and the other is 1920×1080… you can’t multiclip if both are 1920×1080, but one is 29.97 and the other is 23.98.

You shouldn’t even be working with the Canon footage as h.264, that needs to be converted to ProRes.

So, you need to convert BOTH sources to 1920×1080 ProRes, with the matching frame rate.

hi, I have a problem now!!

Hi, recently recorded a corporate video in xdcam HQ 1920 X 1080 24P
Another day continue recording but made a mistake. recorded in xdcam HQ 1920 X 1080 60i
I noticed my mistake when editing in fcp. In the timeline the last footage (recorded 60i) seems to have some trouble playing. it doesnt runs smooth, like the rest of the material in timeline.
    my timeline settings are
    FRAME SIZE: 1920 x 1080i
    ASPECT RATIO: HDTV (16:9)
    PIXEL ASPECT RATIO: SQUARE
    COMPRESSOR: APPLE PRO RESOLUTION HQ
Ihaved tried to export the xdcam HQ 1920 X 1080 60i in fcp to xdcam HQ 1920 X 1080 24P,
but the results are the same…

ANY IDEA WHAT CAN I DO??
    help will be appreciate!!

[jose lara] “hi, please tell me how to do that!! “

Canon 5D, download the EOS Log and Transfer plugin, and then use Log and Transfer to import the footage as ProRes. Make SURE you have the full card structure, or this won’t work. If you don’t have the full card structure, then you need to use COMPRESSOR and the Advanced Conversion section…ProRes 422 for Progressive. For the frame rate you shot.

Canon XH A1…HDV camera. You can capture that as ProRes via firewire, but then the dimensions are not the same as the 5D. They are 1440×1080, as it is an anamorphic format. So without a capture card it would be best to capture as HDV, then again use Compressor to convert to ProRes.

Please tell me you shot the same frame rate. If not, then you need to convert one to the other. Again, this is a setting in Compressor.

This is why it is ill advised to shoot different camera types when you plan to multiclip. Shooting takes planning, so make sure that you have a post plan BEFORE you shoot. Post is not an afterthought, it is the destination of everything you shoot. Plan for that destination.

So what is the recommended workflow here if 90% of your footage is from XHA1s and the remainder from the 5DMk11? Can you not “down res.” for the XHA1 instead of having to upres all that footage fto match the 5D? I tried to down res using Mpeg Streamclip but of course it only down rezes to 4 x 3 not 16 x9

I am wondering the same question in this moment: I shot most of my stuff on the XHA1 but have a bit on the MarkII. What format should I edit in?

Should I change the XHA1 footage? Now I have it in Prores where I want to edit, but will it look bad with the 1920×1080 Mark II stuff? Both are 24 fps.

Import your 5D MK11 footage with the Canon plug in and top resolution. Use an HV30 or HV40’s HDMI output to capture the XHA1 footage at the same resolution. When you do this, there is less rendering for FCP. You will need an import card to feed in the HDMI signal. I use the Matrox Mini. You don’t have to do this but it makes for easier editing and less rendering.

I already captured the XHA1 footage at ProRes 422 1440×1080.
I only have a little bit of the Mark II footage I am using. Should I change the sequence settings?
