Multicam Edits with Canons; HV30, XLH1 or XHA1
About 1 year ago, I did a beautiful multicam edit with my Sony HVR-A1U and a Canon XL-H1. The Sony is ONLY 1080i60, I shoot everything with the Canons in 1080F30. Worked perfectly. Since then, I put the Sony to rest and got an XHA1, and used both in 1080F30 for multicam edits.. works great.
About a month or so ago I got an Canon HV30 since it does P30, I tried doing a multicam edit with this and it tells me the Codecs are different. It lists the Canon as a 1080i60 (BUT IT WAS SET TO P30).. looking at the video and fast action, it is clearly progressive..
FC won’t do a multicam clip because it says the codecs are different.. Two questions (1) It worked before with my sony in 1080i60, why not now. (2) Why did it believe it captured in 1080i60 when it was P30?
Anyone got a clue to this? Does this mean since some earlier update you can’t mix the two for some reason?

I figured the only way to do it is to convert them both to the same format (export.. probably, maybe compressor), which will of course induce some loss in quality, then it should work. I haven’t had to deal with this yet, but I have a bunch of tape I have to edit in the next month that I really want to be able to do this.. so I’m pretty sure this is a valid work around, it’s just not great, especially when I KNOW this used to work, it really kinda sucks that this was a feature they removed with an update.Thanks.. Yeah, I’m about to convert my footage. That’s the only workaround that I could think of…I was just hoping this issue had been addressed with a more efficient solution.

Dealing with this situation now. No resolution. It seems that there is no way to create a mulitclip without converting BOTH camera angles to the same frame rate and codec. UGH.

Yeah that’s what I ended up doing. The funniest thing it *USED* to work and they broke it. I did this before with a Sony in 1080i60 and a Canon in 1080F30 and it worked great about a year or so ago, got an update and it no longer worked.Also, I don’t know if you are aware (or care).. but you cannon use COLOR with multiclips, which really sucks.. After spending a couple of weeks really trying to learn the ins and outs of it, it’s a really wonderful package (but takes alot of time to do it right).. as alot of what I shoot ends up in multiclips, then you have to hand color balance which is NEVER as good and much more clumsy and time consuming.
I hope they fix both of these in the next release.. its a major limitation.
