Planning on up grading my system shortly. I am considering two pieces of hardware to monitor hd video – the Multibridge Extreme and the Matrox MXO. My question – Can the Multibridge Extreme be used to simultaineously monitor hd video from a Final Cut Pro timeline, on the fly, via DVI-D to a 23 inch Apple Cinema Display, and downconverted to an SD signal for a CRT SD post production monitor. If this is possible, is it a viable alternative to using a HD CRT monitor for broadcast colour correction. I know the MXO is capable of the above, but I would prefer to buy the multibridge as it offers inputs as well as outputs. The computer would be a 2.66 Ghz mac pro. Thanks in advance, Kieran

    Hi Kieran,

Yes, when the Multibridge Extreme is set to output split HD and SD, it can output SD via the component analog outputs, while outputting HD via one of the SDI outputs as well as the DVI-D output. The other SDI output will show SD. Many people use this function exactly as you have described, ie for detailed image monitoring on a 23″ LCD display while using the SD CRT monitor for color correction.

I presume your HD format is interlaced (like 1080i)? That works.

Simultaneous viewing of progressive HD and down converted interlaced SD (NTSC or PAL) does not work on any Blackmagic or AJA product that I have seen, while the MXO may.

That being said, I love being able to output SDI, component and composite all at the same time with my Multibridge Extreme. Not to mention that the Multibridge has inputs- the MXO does not.

The MXO will allow you to view either progressive or interlaced footage on the Apple Cinema Display 23 inch. It’s not as good as viewing on an HD CRT, but for now its as good as I can afford.
