    Hi!

I was wondering if there is a way to assign a single material to different objects but still be able to change the color for instance. In 3ds max that I currently use there is a multi id map. It is a map that used the ids of polygons and let you apply a map to them inside a material. A similar function is standard in Vray 2.0 but that hasn’t been released yet for Cinema.

    Nobody?

How would you go about assigning materials to ten different object that all share the same material properties except color values. Ten different materials?

you can use “Mix Textures” 1654_mixtextures.c4d.zip
Texture mixing is additive so in that example the base texture doesn’t have any color at all and the two ‘color’ textures only have color just to keep it simple. If the base had color in it the mixing would add the colors together, the same goes for all the other channels (there’s a whole section on mixing in the help).

An other way would be the plugin Reference Shader which allows you to reference any channel of one material to put into another material. So you could put a bump in one texture and reference it in all the others so if you decide on a change you change one and they all change. Basically the same as mixing but without having to be aware of additive issues.
