I’m looking for an audio effect that would muffle audio. The scene is a person waking from a dream to someone calling their name. I want the audio of the person who is calling their name to be muffled at first and gradually get clearer. No doubt I can figure this out with trial and error, but if you are aware of a filter that would suit that need, I would appreciate the tip. Many thanks.

To muffle the audio you could try adding a lowpass filter to your audio track and set the cutoff to a low value, try 350Hz as a starting point and alter to taste. In terms of making it get cleaner over time, you could either split the audio track and remove the lowpass filter from the right hand side and then mix the two together for the transition. A second way is to keyframe the lowpass filter so the cutoff goes from the low value up to it’s maximum value,
