what is the file’s name extension? its often the case that quicktime based apps will simply refuse to open a file thats file format does not match its extension, so:
if the existing extension is .mpeg or .mpg then try changing that file extension to .3gpp
if its already .3gpp then try changing the file extension to .mpeg

Did you ever get this figured out? I am having the exact same problem. I want to download spots from theadspot.tv and run them out on our station, but only vlc seems to play these files. We use a quicktime based on-air playout solution. How did you resolve this issue?

Hi guys,

I’m able to replicate this issue as well. Seems QT is more friendly to DVD Mpeg2 streams not these muxed streams as these are designed for broadcast servers.

Here is how I got this to transcode to something you can use:

Download and install FFMpegX https://www.ffmpegx.com/download.html

You will need to install the Binaries listed on the webpage, but run the app and it will tell you it needs these in order to run.

Simply drag and drop the file you downloaded to the source window area, mid-left area of FFMpegX.

It will probably set the ‘Target Format’ setting to something like an AVI. I wouldn’t go with that one, so choose a more appropriate setting, or create one but changing the settings on the Video-Audio-Filters-options-tools tabs in the middle.

Hey Thanks Guys,

I was trying to figure this one out myself. I do programming for our Education Channel 96 on Charter.
We use an Apple Xserve & 6TB XRAID along with some software from Bug.Tv to playback a mix of Annenberg and Locally produced programs. The shows we do are edited with Final Cut 6 and moved to the server RAID for AIR.

I was getting a bunch of Ad Council stuff on 3/4″ Tape for ingest. And then I noticed that they had some spots in mpeg format for download. It seemed like a good way do get better quality copies and quicker acquisition for us. I have been fighting with the Muxed Mpeg2 file format for a about month until I stumbled across this thread.
