Mpeg audio in DVD Architect
Posted by Vsv on September 27, 2005 at 10:33 amWhy impossible use mpeg audio in DVD Architect without recompression to PCM or AC3?
MPEG1 layer2 is part of DVD specification, but in project properties
i can choose only PCM, ac3 2.0 and ac3 5.1.
Sony’s programmers, please make option for mpeg audio and possibility
“Put SVCD or SATV files directly on a DVD without re-encoding”
This option included in DVDlab and very useful
https://www.mediachance.com/dvdlab/tutorial/svcd.htmlThank you in advance!

Guess that kind of depends on where you are. Where I’m at, MPEG1 Layer2 audio is NOT part of the DVD specification. It is not a requirement for players in the United States to support that format.
Out of curiosity, why use MPEG audio instead of AC3 audio?

September 27, 2005 at 3:04 pmA guess – Sony doesn’t include MPEG audio because it is not a mandatory part of the DVD spec, and therefore not all players support it. It is mandatory that all players manufactured to the DVD spec playback PCM and AC3.
BTW, it isn’t correct to say “recompressed to PCM”, because PCM is an uncompressed format.

I guess it’s what one gets used to.
* PAL DVD players handle MPEG layer-2 whithout any problems.
* the MPG file holds interleaved audio and video just like an AVI file.
* A single render operation from time lineI understand that AC3 takes less space on DVD than MPEG but I do not know enough to tell if the audio quality is better.

do not have such restrictions. My opinion this is bug, which must be corrected.
PAL DVD projects without possibility use mpeg audio simply foolishness of programmers. -

September 28, 2005 at 4:43 pmPoint taken – I see how this could be an important feature for PAL users. (all PAL players support MPEG audio?)
There is a place on sonymediasoftware.com for feature requests. Ah, there it is.

September 29, 2005 at 3:50 amMPEG Audio is part of the PAL DVD standard. For a while there was whispering of MPEG being the standard for PAL users instead of AC3 (way back when the DVD standard was being worked on) as far as I can remember. Lots of heated discussions.
Since AC3 is part of the PAL DVD spec, I don’t see what the fuss is about. Just encode your PAL DVDs with AC3 audio.

Terje A. Bergesen,
recompression of original (fully DVD compliant stereo 384Kbps, 48Khz)
mpeg audio stream of MUSIC videos means the losses in quality!
These clips was encoded by Optibase MovieMaker200 from digibeta through SDI
and i don’t want to worsen the quality of the sound and video.
I’m aware, impossibility to choose mpeg audio for PAL project-
is mistake of DVD Architect programmers.
