I am compressing roughly 50 minutes of DV content to MPEG-2 using the built in “DVD 90 minutes Best Quality” settings and it is taking about 12 hours. I started the process last night and I figured it would take a couple hours, but it ended up taking 12.

In the past I compressed a 90 minute feature on this Powerbook and it took 19 hours. This was 23.98 footage shot with the DVX-100A. I did the same feature on a dual 2.4ghz G5 computer at work and it took an hour and a half.

My powerbook is 1.5ghz G4, 2 gb RAM, Final Cut 6.0.2, Compressor 3.

Do you have any suggestions, or reasons why it would take this long? Is the G4 processor inadequate when it comes to MPEG-2 compression? Could there be something I do not have configured correctly? Any help would be appreciated…I feel this processing time is a bit ridiculous.

Try modifying the preset and reducing the ‘Motion Estimation’ from ‘Best’ to ‘Better’ or less.

Also, going for one pass VBR over two pass VBR will roughly half the time taken if you are prepared to take another hit on quality.
