  • MP4’s Come Out Looking Terrible In Vegas 12

Hey guys, have a quick question

Now with the help of you all here I am editing raw MTS files in Vegas and am looking now to render my project, one problem, the high quality mp4’s come out looking like absolute garbage, the problem is blocky pixels and a lot of them!

The thing I dont understand is that the settings are fine they are 1920 X 1080, bitrate on constant of 10,0000.

The strange thing is, is that when viewed on fullscreen in Vegas 12 IT LOOKS WAY BETTER than it does when viewed in mp4 after its rendered.

I dont see these pixels while its rendering, and also it seems like the quality will drop down for certain parts and then switch back up to a higher quality, and im not talking about different shots, for one part it showed a face and nothing really changed except for the mouth moving and the pixels went from a ton to just magically nothing.

These are all RAW MTS files with half being 29.97 frames and the other half being 59 frames with them disampled, its a mixed bag really to what looks fine and what does not, there is no rhyme or reason to why certain parts are pixly and some other parts are not

I remember a few months back I had a method, what I did was take all my MTS files, converted them to a lower resoultion mp4, then edit those, then take the MTS and convert those into an absolutley high quality bitrate and then swapped them, that mp4 that came out from that was gorgeous not a pixel in sight..

So I seem to have a problem here help is appreciated!

This is probably because you are using a constant bit rate. Use a variable bit rate with the two pass option to make the best use of the bits.

In your long detailed post, you have neglected to mention
the most important info, what was the detailed render setting
and format did you use to render?
I consistently recommend using the Sony AVC format for
    flawless, pristine MP4/AVC renders.

I have done this, the results are better but still there are obvious pixels that drop and come back I can see, I set it to two pass with 14,000 bitrate which should be way more than enough

Also I assume now the bitrate is way to high for my computer to handle, I can view other hd videos and they play smooth but now since this render is so large yet the pixels are still there it seems like it lags as if the bitrate is way to large or something

I noticed I do not have Sony AVC MP4 setting in Vegas 12, In the list if I choose to edit the Mp4 ones are all standard definition, and there is m2ts options bluray options are AVC, there is no other option for hd mp4s than the Main concept AVC/AAC which is the one I am using currently

With this option im making it a two pass with variable bit rate at 14,0000 there shouldnt be any reason why there are pixels, i cant seem to figure out why there is

Do you have any codec-paks installed on your system? Also try both Sony AVC and MainConcept AVC and see which one produces better results.

The original MTS files are probably 16Mbps and I assume they play fine so a 14Mbps AVC file should play fine. This is really odd.

I deliver 720p @ 4,000 bps to YouTube all the time with no pixleation when fading to/from black so I’m not sure why you are having this problem unless you have a codec-pak like K-Lite installed that is messing things up.

Never-the-less you have them, there will always be unexplained issues.
Also, you should be seeing the Sony AVC Template, if you are not using
the latest update of Vegas (Build 714), do so now.

Im not sure if I have codec packs installed, I know i have xvid, but for AVC there is not an option for MP4 renders unless you use Mainconcept but the mainconcept is showing many pixels

Ok this is just so weird, i found out that choosing Sony AVC it gives me three options…

An option that only does standard definition

    An option called avchd

    and bluray

the bluray one doesnt even work once it is rendered as I cant open it to view it in any program

The Avchd one was the only one that I could view except it is rendered in M2ts format which gives me no other option to save as an mp4, and the weird thing is now the quality is amazing, it is perfect, except i noticed just like all other Mts files when you play them they lag and are completly unplayable and also it has a weird fast forwarding effect on it that doesnt play in Vegas or in VLC even though the settings are set to 29.97 which is what the files are.

So this leaves me with no other choice, the Mainconcept doesnt work, and this Sony AVC cant work eaither.

I tried to cleaverly copy and paste my project timeline into Vegas 10 (Because when rendered mainconcept in vegas 10 I get FLAWLESS mp4 renders) but everytime I paste it into 10 i just get a error message and vegas 10 has to close 🙁

So anyone have any more ideas I can try? Thanks
